africa, a cursed continent?
what is happening in kenya is not unusual or strange but a mirror-image of the malady sweeping through the continent of africa. stranger than fiction? the other day, it was rwanda; the next time it was liberia; then senegal, ivory coast; zimbabwe etc. nigeria nearly recently exploded but for the election tribunal currently deliberating over the "election" nay selection of the incumbent by the atrocious obasanjo regime; which foisted an "unelected" government on her people. hopefully the election tribunal will come out with an acceptable arrangement that the people can live with. annulling the election might not be a palatable option as vacuum creates more obtrusive environment that might descend into anarchy. ebekuo thinks the best thing in the nigeria situation is for yaradua to publicly and on national television admit his connivance to rig the election and apologise to the nigeria people especially the leadership of the opposition parties and implore them in the interest of the nation that they move on. anything short will be rubbishing the psychology of the populace and daring them in the face of obvious electoral malpractice. back to kenya and why kibaki will not let go of an election which he apparently lost. there is too much honey in the pot and so much have been eaten and letting go is very difficult. africa operates an executive presidential democracy where the chief executive president has everything under his thumb including the national treasury. he is almost at par with an absolute monarchy with power to loot the treasury dry; power to kill the governed without let; power of life and death over the ruled. they can hire and fire judges at whim and can also advise their underlings to disobey court orders with state police to enforce their will. an africa president can also convert his nation's central bank into his personal current account and can dish out largess to his cronies without questions asked. kibaki cannot go except he is forced and even where he desires such, his minions will prod him to hang in there. that kenya might disintegrate into a tribal comiums fighting in an intractable civil war is a possibility judging from the fate of other african countries too many to count. unfortunately, the same kibaki wrested power from arap moi who desired to stay forever until reason finally prevailed. a look at zimbabwe shows the same pattern as mugabe would rather be carried out in a hearse than see reason. very recently, we have now seen why mbeki of south africa was very reluctant to persuade mugabe to see reason - simply because he too was scheming his own plans to perpetuate himself in power. luckily anc spoke and zuma is today the groom in waiting. but zuma should be vigilant as these african leaders are deaf, dumb and blind when it comes to matters of power. a look at egypt shows a president who has been in power since 1979; libya's gaddaffi has been in office since 1969/73 or thereabout; paul biya of cameroon has been in power since ahmadu ahidjo died in early 80's; same goes to chad, niger as well as all the arab north africa. it is power and absolute power. if anything happens in kenya and kenya is no more due to the greed of kibaki, only kibaki and kibaki alone should be held responsible. the world should rise up and stop this other african-mugabe from accomplishing his goal. another election or a national unity government with an interim chairman to conduct fresh elections is the panacea. only that will save the land of rift valley. that the statesman mandela is an african is surprising as he voluntarily reliquinshed power and stayed out of power without much prodding. if only africa has more mandelas!
