Watching the trial so far, it is apparent that Democrats have punted from their initially charged count in their Article of Impeachment that the president's speech caused the insurrection. They are now all over the map regurgitating everything and anything which ever came out of the president's mouth or twitting fingers, dating back to periods long before his January 6th speech. They accused the president of telling his supporters to fight and to march to the Capitol but selectively edited out his additional qualifying statement to "peacefully and patriotically" march to cheer on some weak Republicans to help them find the courage to do what is right. Democrats know and are fully aware that there was no incitement words that was uttered by the president in that speech, hence their decision to expand their field of fishing to see if there is anything else they could rope the president in with which will prove their charge.
It is most regrettable that instead of proving their one count charge of "incitement of insurrection" by his speech of January 6th, their hatred of the president have led them to such extreme fields of absurdity, an over broad search for anything that could result in his culpability. A scope of accusations far beyond their initial January 6th accusation and for which they impeached the president seven days later on the 13th. They were expected to concentrate their effort in adducing evidence of his speech being the cause of the riots, by establishing how his speech caused the riot and what aspects of his speech were inciting. But there is none, hence the adventure to finding something extracurricular the 6th to prove the 6th.
Anyway, the proceeding so far is boring as they are only inundating the people with facts already known to the public, without any additional new disclosures or the promised bombshell never seen before videos which would have shocked the conscience of the nation. So far, none have materialized. Nobody is denying that what happened on January 6th was horrible as most people who watched the live broadcast were horrified by what they saw. The issue in contention is that what happened was not caused bt the speech which the president gave, but Democrats would want us to believe otherwise that the speech made the rioters to storm the Capitol. Peradventure, it seems that their impeachment managers are now somewhat trying to tow a different line or correction, albeit tacitly, by not dwelling on the said speech of January 6th anymore but rather concentrating on the riot inside the Capitol itself and aggregation of other speeches by the president before the January 6th speech to establishment causation.
They also have no shame in their effort to overawe the people by openly using words which were otherwise considered prohibited for public consumption and which words are usually muted or paraphrased. It was shocking to hear Democrats loudly and publicly say "pussy" and "bullshit" inside the Senate gallery in a live television broadcast which was disseminated into millions of homes world wide and during day time public television event in America with children tuned in and watching. Were was the outrage denouncing Democratic Party's impeachment managers being so brazen with use of words which are considered profanities. They also accused the president of branding Joe Biden a "illegitimate president" but seem to have forgotten that their Madam Speaker Nancy Pelosi once called President Donald John Trump an "impostor and a terrorist." These are the same people who accused the president of stealing the 2016 election with help of Vladimir Putin but now it is a prohibited utterance to say that the 2020 election was stolen with help of election fraud.
ICHEOKU says a rehash of what happened inside the Capitol on January 6th is actually irrelevant at this stage because everybody watched it unfold on live television broadcast. What American people and the rest of the tuned in world are eager to know is how it was caused by the president's speech of January 6th. Their correlation is the 900 pounds elephant in the room but they are not forthcoming with the evidence, at least not so far. And given the fact that the Senate has jurisdiction to try an impeachment matter, the only issue which the president's team should argue is whether the Senate's duty to sit in judgment over the president has been overtaken by a subsequent development, that the president is no longer in office, which matter of factly rendered the trial moot. There is nothing more for the Senate to determine as there is no more office of the president being occupied which needs to be vacated by an erring president who was found guilty.
It is also instructive too that the type of "fight" envisaged by the president was not the physical fist of fury combat fight. His intention was clearly discernible from the speech which he made such as when he said "Rudy got guts, he fights"; which is an indicator of the type of fight which the president meant because Rudy never engages in physical fight or riots but in vocal and legal fights. The president meant that his supporters should be vociferous and forceful in their protestation and arguments for a restoration of mandate which was stolen by the Democrats, but not for them to engage in any destructive physical attack on anyone or the Capitol. He also used the words "to cheer them on" which does not look like fighting words either or any invitation to a riotous incitement. The president also used the words "we have begun to fight" in an address to MAGA supporters rally in Washington DC which also shows that "fight" as used by the president in his speeches was merely figuratively intended but not literary.
But Republicans do not seem to get it, the fact that Democrats are out to ruin them permanently by dividing and conquering them and scaring away their base. First the man who grew their base is being targeted with a threatened abolition from future political participation and then their base are being harassed, arrested and shamed into abandoning the party just for voting Republican. This will leave the Republican Party heavily shortchanged by the desertion of disgusted voters who might sit out subsequent elections if they do not get satisfaction from the defense of the president by the Republican Party's leadership. Time to man up and grow steely backbone is now and they must fight to keep the president safely in contention.
The only take away from the proceeding so far is the effort by Democrats to reduce America in the eyes of the world and make America a laughing stock where facts are relative and where the standard of "justice" depends on whether the accused person's last name is Trump or Clinton. They are manipulating facts and trying at all cost to paint the president in a bad light and tarnish his image but they will not succeed. Impeachment is to protect the office of a president and not to punish a president; otherwise imprisonment would have been the recommend and prescribed recourse but not removal from office. Even the "ban from subsequent office", which is the other remedy, is subject to a president having been first removed from office before he can then be banned from ever running for office. The president was not removed from office, so the second remedy automatically collapsed. But hey, American people are watching to see where the ants will drag the toad, but it is definitely an assault on everything American justice system of fairness holds dear.
