ABIOLA'S POSTHUMOUS HONOR: HIGHLY COMMENDABLE.
ICHEOKU says President Muhammadu Buhari definitely rose up to the occasion in his decision, granting a posthumous honor to and recognition of presidential election victory of the late Moshood Kamawole Oluwole Abiola. It was an honor long overdue and which many presidents before him would have done but their pettiness, mean spiritedness and crass partisan politics prevented them from doing and they lost out. Their loss and missed opportunity is today, Buhari's gain; and the country is grateful.
ICHEOKU commends the president for courageously making right that very wrong, perpetrated on millions of Nigerians, whose mandate was stolen by that band of military renegades led by the midget of Oturkpo David Mark. A matter made worse because the same David Mark, who denied Abiola his democratic mandate, is today parading himself as a democrat and enjoying the benefits of the democracy which he contrived to deprive Abiola of. The presidential gesture will also help heal the festering wound inflicted by that thoughtless action, a betrayal of the people of Nigerians by some few armed thugs in uniform, who happened to be members of the military. Pitiful urchins, miscreants and bandits who stole a mandate of a people who paid for their training and uniforms as well as their guns.
Now that President Muhammadu Buhari has done what those past presidents could not do or rather refused to do, he deserves the appreciation of every justice loving Nigerian, irrespective of their political differences with the president. The president has earned the praises of all men and women of goodwill, honor and personage that desire to see the injustices of the many decades, made right. ICHEOKU hereby extend our appreciation to the president for remedying this particular wrong because an injustice does to one, is a justice deprived all. In as much as the gesture will not resurrect Abiola nor swear him into office as president of Nigeria, a presidency which he rightly convincingly won, at least it is something done towards making right, the wrong done by the June 12th 1993 annulment. It is therefore deservedly highly commendable.
Formally recognizing MKO Abiola as the winner of that presidential election is definitely a good step in the right direction. Nigerians overwhelmingly voted for Abiola to be their president except that some military goons decided otherwise and truncated the will of the Nigerian people. Their treasonous act of brigandage has by this magnanimous act of the president also been swept away into the sewer of horrible history which every decent Nigerian would rather is forever forgotten as if they never happened.
Awarding Abiola the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) is also in order for a man of his stature, who accomplished much and rose to become a presidential candidate and indeed actually won a presidential election before some crazies in uniform annulled it. Now, the June 12th Democracy Day will become a formal holiday in honor of MKO Abiola just like Martin Luther King's day in the United States of America. By this honor, Democracy Day June 12th will now be referred to as MKO Abiola Democracy Day, in memory and honor of his sacrifice for democracy in Nigeria. Although Olusegun Obasanjo, in his usual antagonistic disposition towards anybody in Yoruba land, rising above him or who dares rival him, had derisively and sarcastically said that Abiola is not the Messiah Nigerians are yawning for, but the same Abiola has now become the Messiah of Democracy in Nigeria.
ICHEOKU congratulates the awardee, albeit post humorously; and also appreciates President Muhammadu Buhari for taking the bold initiative to remedy an indisputable wrong which was done to this great Nigerian. That Gani Fawehinmi was also honored is a good thing; admitted Professor Humphrey Nwosu too should have also been honored for his courage and bravery that announced the election result; because without him, nobody will be talking about any Abiola winning that election. Hopefully, the president will later remedy this omission by also honoring the professor and head of then INEC. As to all those Never Buhari activists, ICHEOKU says you do not have to love Buhari to appreciate the goodness in what he did. It was a wrong that deserved to be remedied and he did his best to remedy it, and as much as he could possibly do, short of resurrecting and swearing Abiola into office.
We should learn to appreciate the good in others, as well as good deeds done by them, regardless of out political differences. The honor was long overdue, it is a good thing; so regardless of whodunnit, it is remains good and should be commended. It should not be scoffed at or demeaned or in any other way derisively and scornfully dismissed as a political gimmickry or ploy to bait the Yoruba voters in 2019. ICHEOKU hereby denounces any expressed opinion that did not and could not rise above whatever disagreement or repulsion, to appreciate the merit in what was done. It is okay to sometimes dislike the messenger but still accept a good message which he or she may bore.
President Muhammadu Buhari may be the Dracula of Daura or the facilitator of terrorists Fulani herdsmen killers or whatever you want him to be, that is both evil and demonic, but what he did by making right this wrong, is beyond reproach and above any condemnation. At least, for once, he exhibited a good saintly heart as he avenged the Abiola maltreatment by some despicable few members of the military who conspired to annul that election. It was a well mannered and well reasoned out act and President Muhammadu Buhari did a good thing, perhaps the only good thing he ever achieved in office, if you like to punt it that way. MKO Abiola will now finally rest and hopefully see the goodness in what the president did and ICHEOKU says it is the right thing to do and it was done. Kudos to President Muhammadu Buhari.
