The news making the rounds in the world of energy and oil is the latest intent by the Nigerian government to indict former United States of America's vice president Dick Cheney; for his actions while chairman of Halliburton in bribing some Nigerian government officials. Icheoku says this smells like an attempt by the uninspiring Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan to score cheap mention in the world press as being serious with his 'Jonathan's war against corruption' in Nigeria.
It is all a gimmick; scripted for a show as President Jonathan is overlooking corruption-instigator-in-chief, Olusegun Obasanjo, who is there within his government's jurisdictional authority and is rather stretching his 'goodluck' too far trying to indict an American former vice president. Icheoku says, without a bribe-demander and taker who demanded and received the bribe, there would never be a bribe-giver in the first place; so it makes absolutely no sense at all that Olusegun Obasanjo who demanded and received the Halliburton's $180million bribe will be walking the grounds of Nigeria a freeman while the person who was compelled at the risk of losing a lucrative $6billion gas contract is now being indicted for bribing the bribe-demander/taker. It is akin to the sharia law in Iran wherein a woman is condemned for having sex while the man she had sex with is free of all crime and both parties were in adulterous relationship.
Some things do not seem right with this latest development and its timing; especially with the Save Nigeria Group (SNG) recent allegation that the same President Jonathan attempted to bribe them with $50,000. But hey, at least the indictment will collaborate what WikiLeaks accused the Americans of:- saying one thing and doing another! Icheoku asks, is there anything endemically wrong with everyone doing what they ask others to do - just practice what you preach and it will be honky-dory the world over. Pharisee! Pharisee! Pharisee!
