GUN VIOLENCE IN AMERICA: FOR WHO THE BELL TOLLS NEXT.

Just five people shy of Sandy Hook elementary school mass shooting incident that claimed 26 lives, the Uvalde Texas Robb elementary school mass shooting at 21 victims, now ranks among the highest grossing gun carnage in America. It is sad that such frequent blood spilling has tragically become part of our culture as a society. May the souls of the killed now rest.

MOHAMMED YUSUF, HIS DEATH LINKED TO A COMPROMISED JUDICIAL SYSTEM!

At last, in what appears to be a letting of the cat out of the bag, Icheoku has learnt that the leader of the nefarious criminal Boko Haram Sect was killed because of fear that the Nigeria's very corrupt judicial system will probably set him free?
Nigerian security officials, wary of the compromised Nigerian court system and the high probability of their turning him loose, decided to visit a vigilante brand of justice instead of legal justice on the captured terrorist, Mohammed Yusuf! They decided to solve the problem of Mohammed Yusuf how they know best, finish him off without wasting their time going through a judicial process that is endemically corrupt? With his influence and wealth, Mohammed could easily buy his way out of legal justice but definitely not vigilantism, so his fate was sealed. In one police officer's very own words while commenting on the murder of Mohammed Yusuf, he said, "it's good riddance because our judiciary system has many loopholes," and he could have been "let off the hook," if prosecuted?
Icheoku says, may be they have a point here bearing in mind that an Abuja High Court had as early as January 20, this year, granted Mohammed Yusuf and some of his followers an unconditional bail following arrest? The group had been arrested on November 13, 2008, for public incitement and taken to Abuja for trial, but were turned loose by the court; which did not seat down well with Nigerian security operatives. They waited and waited for the right time to take their vengeance and lo and behold, came the riots and the rest is now history. But does such excuse make it right for the Nigerian authorities to take the laws into their hands and summarily execute a suspect without giving him the opportunity to defend himself? Icheoku does not think so, and does not expect any right thinking mind, with some jurisprudential sensibilities to applaud this act of the Nigerian government! Having been arrested, the natural next step of investigation and prosecution should follow and let the chips fall where they may!
Pictured above left is the captured and virtually unscathed Mohammed Yusuf being led away by the Nigerian army, which said they handed him over to the police for further investigation? Here right is the bullet riddled body of Mohammed Yusuf soon-after his bombardment by his 'investigators'? Was he also burnt or was some phosphorous compound used in his killing as he practically looks like what remained of Dele Giwa after Babangida's parcel bomb?
Below left is the same expired Mohammed Yusuf with his cranial contents gushed out; - a result of high velocity bullets which were severally pumped into his head, at a very close range, bursting his skull in different places, while in the custody of the Nigerian authorities? It would appear that after bursting his brains in the picture below, not content enough they went a step further and unleashed some chemicals on his lifeless body, above right? Barbaric! Crude! Lawless! Vicious! Uncivilized!
Mohammed Yusuf was born on January 29, 1970 in Girgir village, Jakusko Local Government Area of Yobe State in Northern Nigeria. He was married to four wives and had 12 children. The late fiery Islamic lunatic fanatic cleric and leader of the Boko Haram sect, Mohammed Yusuf earned his notoriety railing against western education and consistently arguing that the current system in Nigeria, symbolised by government, needed to be overthrown and replaced with an extreme version of Islamic law? Icheoku says, if only Mohammed Yusuf had argued against the pandemic corruption festering in Nigeria and targeted some very highly corrupt officials in his crusade; and not wrongly attack western education, maybe he would have had some sympathetic support from the bone-weary Nigerians who have been eagerly waiting and looking forward to the coming of a messiah to clean house?
Mohammed Yusuf founded Boko Haram in 2002 as a platform with which to carry out his warped ideological re-orientation of Nigeria? (Boko Haram is an Hausa language which means "Western education is sinful"?) But as one contributor to Icheoku.com recently pointed out, these lunatics in Northern Nigeria who preach going back to the caveman-like ways still enjoy products such as cell-phones, SUV, clothing, quality health care, air-conditioners, airplanes, weaponry etc? According to his argument, if these mullahs do not like western education why would they like products that came about as a result of it? Why would they not at the same breath, equally shun such inventions and good things of life which western education made possible? What an irony of double-speak and a juxtaposition of a conflicted mindset these northern urchins represent? It is equally instructive that these tormentors of Nigerians habitually come from the northern part of Nigeria and have on countless occasions visited mayhem on Nigerians. Such is the frequency that one is forced to ask, can anything good and productive ever come out of these mallams of the northern Sahara desert of Nigeria? What fuels these anti-people violence by these almajiris, should be a right investigation to conduct towards finally stemming the incessant blood-letting of Nigerians by some crazed-out desert dwellers who are angry, frustrated, violent, timid and irascible!
Mohammed Yusuf had in his kitty, 3,000 rabid adherent fanatics as well as other followers and supporters including some former government officials. One of them, a former commissioner Alhaji Foi Buji was similarly executed by the Nigeria state over this crisis. Pictured here left is captured Alhaji Foi Buji, handcuffed and barely clothed, sitting behind an open truck transporting him to his execution grounds - the premises of the Nigerian police? The bottom right picture shows the partially dirt-covered lifeless body of executed Alhaji Foi, soon after he arrived the Nigerian police premises? What a changing faces of a man who was once a government high-up, - a result of overzealous high-handedness of the Nigerian security apparatus.

Icheoku uses this opportunity to once again condemn the high rate of state murders in Nigeria. We also hope that some disgruntled politicians who had axe to grind with some people will not cash into this crisis and see it as an opportunity to settle some scores! Be that as it may, we do not ascribe to the various calls for an investigation into the particular murder of Mohammed Yusuf; especially in isolation of other similarly situated state killings in Nigeria. If there must be an investigation, it must be total, complete and general! Let such investigation, if any, be all embracing and all covering to accommodate all such known extra-judicial murders carried out in Nigeria by the government. Otherwise, let Mohammed Yusuf lie in his unmarked grave as yet another sad story of Nigeria's law enforcement vigilantism!
FYI:- We are only referencing extra-judicial killings carried out by the Nigerian state after the suspect had already been arrested, shackled, manacled in leg chains and handcuffs and confined, with AK47 toting security operatives menacingly watching over him! And in this regard, some victims readily come to mind, including Niger Delta's Ken Niweigha pictured above left middle in a blue shirt; Alhaji Foi Buji the alleged sponsor of Haka Borom, no, Boko Haram and the Boma Brothers also of Niger Delta, whose execution was caught on tape! 1. Nothing wrong in killing sect leader – Sheikh Khalil
    Latest news
    Written by Auwalu Umar, Kano
There is nothing wrong in last Thursday’s killing of Boko Haram Islamic sect leader Muhammad Yusuf and the Nigerian Army and Police directed to crush the uprising should not be blamed for the apparent extra-judicial killings during the crisis, the chairman, Kano State Council of Ulama Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil said in Kano yesterday.

Sheikh Khalil was asked by Daily Trust to comment on the seeming extra-judicial killings of Boko Haram sect leader Muhammad Yusuf and his followers in last week’s uprisings in Bauchi, Potiskum and Maiduguri in which at least 700 persons, most of whom were members of the Islamic radical group, were killed.

The Muslim cleric said the army and police had to shoot in self-defence, given the fact that members of the militant Islamic group were in possession of equally dangerous weapons.

He said the “so-called power of mysterious disappearance the sect leader and some of his followers were said to have possessed was also a thing of concern to the security forces directed to quell the upheaval. He also said reading from their ideology, members of the radical Islamic sect are so die-hard that even women and small boys among them could confront the army and police in combat, and so the security forces could not in any way take chances.

From his understanding of the security training, according to him, 90 per cent of the Nigerian Army and police personnel were not trained in target shooting, but only how to shoot. And in this case, he also said, the security forces should not be castigated for any extra-judicial killings during the sect’s uprisings because members of the militant group had no special identity that would so differentiate them from the other peace-loving public.

Sheikh Khalil said another point worthy of note was that the sect leader and his followers in the first place made their religious ideology known that they were all out to fight government and its establishments, especially the security outfit, because, according to them, were not built in line with Islamic culture and tradition.

Explaining that Islam does not encourage killing of innocent lives in any form, the cleric however said there could be emotional action on the part of some security forces deployed to crush the militants.

He said only God knows those who killed innocent lives among the security forces during the crisis and the person who intentionally committed the crime.

While describing the incident as unfortunate, the Boko Haram ideology was not a new thing in Nigeria, especially the North as it has been in existence for more than 100 years now. The problem, according to him, began when the Europeans first came to the Northern Nigeria for colonization and the people, especially Muslims, resisted and refused to follow the Whiteman’s way of life.

Sheikh Khalil however called for a deep study of the situation by Nigerian government with a view to proffering a permanent solution. He partly blamed government, especially civilian one, for its inability to take pro-active measures despite all the available security reports on the dicey situation.

Leader’s, according to him, should learn for success. “But how and when? This is very important. Government should always be proactive in security matters. The Boko Haram sect leader Muhammad Yusuf and his followers were not Nigerians in the first place and everybody, including government, knows this fact”, he said.

He recalled that leader of the 1981 Maitatsine uprising in Kano, Mamman Marwa Maitatsine, was not a Nigerian and he preached the same ideology the Boko Haram followers are propagating today. If government is really taking pro-active measures, all these problems would not recur, he said.

  2. •••It’s extra-judicial, barbaric – Sheikh Khalid
    Latest news
Written by Andrew Agbese, Ahmed Muhammed & Mahmud Lalo, Jos.
The killing of Boko Haram leader in Maiduguri recently by the police was not only extra-judicial killing but barbaric, the Chief Imam of Fibre Mosque in Jos Sheik Khalid Aliyu Abubakar has said. He stated this in an interview with our correspondents yesterday in Jos.

According to him, the killing of not only the leader but other members of the sect is an extra judicial act. “We are in a democratic society today whose emblem is the rule of law, I think these people need to be listened to, what is their opinion, what do they mean by Boko Haram, but the government only gave an order to crush them, this is similar to what happened in Jos”, he said.

According to Sheikh Abubakar, “The military spokesperson said the Boko Haram leader was not in physical combat with them, he was caught while he was in hiding and in terms of killing, the soldiers have more dangerous weapons than the police but they handed him over for the process of the law to take its course, but he was shot dead”.

Sheik Abubakar further stated that what the Boko Haram members did was not in the same magnitude to what OPC, Bakkasi Boys and the Niger Delta militants did, asking, “Why is this one taking a different dimension?” He therefore opined that the Borno State Commissioner of Police, the DPO in the area as well as the Inspector General of Police have a case to answer.

He also stated, “This is beginning to call for a serious concern from Nigerians, those in authority cannot just use the security apparatus to just go and kill people, a due process of law has to be followed”. He however decried the activities of the sect, saying, “The step taken by the sect calls for a serious concern, their stand is lamentable and from the point of view of Islam, nobody has the legal authority to come up with something except the giver of the law or based on the interpretation of the Qur’an, hadith or the jurisprudence of the Muslim scholars”.

Similarly, in a telephone interview, Ustaz Ahmad Tijjani Ganan Daaji said “Since he was caught alive the best institution that could proved that he was a rebel under the Islamic law is the court, after he was proven guilty, then the court would sentence him to death”. He said. He therefore appealed to Muslim Ummah always follow genuine Islamic scholars in order to avoid being misled.
