GUN VIOLENCE IN AMERICA: FOR WHO THE BELL TOLLS NEXT.

Just five people shy of Sandy Hook elementary school mass shooting incident that claimed 26 lives, the Uvalde Texas Robb elementary school mass shooting at 21 victims, now ranks among the highest grossing gun carnage in America. It is sad that such frequent blood spilling has tragically become part of our culture as a society. May the souls of the killed now rest.

2.
A Groom gets too close for comfort!

Sometimes certain stories appear to be tales by moonlight but when names and places and events and possibly pictures back such stories up, one cannot but see it as one of those strange occurrences of our times. Can you imagine, a groom being too close to his bride on their wedding day? Holly molly, how can that be possible? And Mary answered the angel, how can that be possible since I know no man? Things happen!
In Batavia New York State, a man was arrested for getting too close to his bride on their wedding day. Police said Timothy Cole 45, quarreled with a guest at his wedding party Friday after re-wedding his ex-wife. When the police arrived, they realized that his bride had a subsisting order of protection against him from their previous marriage. Cole was charged with first-degree criminal contempt, a felony, and ordered jailed without bail.

3. World fatest person!

At over 1000lbs Manuel Uribe from Mexico may be the world's living fatest person. He chows down like a horse and has never left the bed where his fat has imprisoned him all these years of fat induced docility. What a life? But you can possibly avoid his fate by observing good eating manners and protecting your name from being branded a glutton. Eat well and eat less and Manuel Uribe will not be your competitor!

4. Let me adopt you!
When their mother abandoned them, these little curbs have no place to turn to but to a golden retriever named Isabella. At a safari zoo in Caney Kansas a tiger biological mother walked away on her tiny curbs abandoning them to their fate and the inevitable death which would have ultimately been theirs. A dog angel named Isabella appeared and adopted the curbs and today these curbs are being weaned on dog's milk. Icheoku asks will they inherit some dog's tendencies or grow up normal as tigers?

5. A Nigerian Mormon!

Polygamy has been taken to an incredibly new height! A Nigerian has broken a world record of being the highest number of wives-marrying man alive that he shames Warren Jeff of the Mormon Church. Alhaji Bello Abubakar, 84 says he does not go and find women, they come to him and today, eighty-six (86) of them has come to him! According to Abubakar, he considers the fact that God has asked him to do it and he will just marry them. . The former teacher and Muslim preacher, who lives in Bida, Niger State with his wives and at least 170 children, says he is able to cope only with the help of God. Abubakar said that to his understanding, the Koran does not place a limit and it is up to what your own power, your own endowment and ability allows; God did not say what the punishment should be for a man who has more than four wives, but he was specific about the punishment for fornication and adultery. However it does not seem to be a bed of roses as he has since advised other men not to follow his example. Mr Bello Abubakar and his wives do not work and he has no visible means of supporting such a large family. He refuses to say how he makes enough money to pay for the huge cost of feeding and clothing so many people. Some of Mr Bello Abubakar's wives pictured here right in their harem, are younger than some of his children ! Icheoku says, Warren Jeff is then just an amateur!

  1. Nigerian threatened for having 86 wives
    By Agency reporter
    Published: Friday, 22 Aug 2008
The Jamatu Nasril Islam has passed their verdict on Mohammed Bello Abubakar, 84, according to Sharia law.

This comes two weeks after the Nigerian press and the British Broadcasting Corporation reported on the case.

Talking to the media then, Abubakar challenged Muslim scholars, saying there was no punishment stated in the Koran for having more than four wives.

Abubakar, however, advised other men not to follow his example and marry 86 women.

The former teacher and preacher lives in Niger State with his wives and at least, 170 children, and says he is able to cope only with the help of God.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, has noted with concern, the widely reported story which claimed that Abubakar is married to 86 wives.

According to its Secretary-General, Dr. Lateef Adegbite, the Sultan of Sokoto and President NSCIA, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, “is particularly dismayed at the misleading impression being conveyed by Abubakar that his licentious conduct was compatible with Islam.”

He said the Sultan had urged Muslims to ignore Abubakar’s “brazen disregard of Sharia which clearly limits a man to four wives only.”

He advised them to always guard against innovations that could cause confusion and a breach of peace which might adversely affect the security and well-being of our dear nation.

“Muslims must at all times abide by the Islamic Code of Conduct enshrined in the Koran,” he added.

  2. Nigerian faces death for 86 wives

Mr Bello Abubakar challenged Muslim scholars two weeks ago
Nigeria's Islamic authority has told the man who has 86 wives to choose only four and repent within three days or else he will be sentenced to death.

The Jamatu Nasril Islam (JNI) passed their verdict on Mohammed Bello Abubakar, 84, according to Sharia law.

This comes two weeks after the Nigerian press and the BBC reported on the case.

Talking to the media then, Mr Abubakar challenged Muslim scholars, saying there is no punishment stated in the Koran for having more than four wives.

However, Mr Abubakar advised other men not to follow his example and marry 86 women.

    No limit

The former teacher and Muslim preacher lives in Niger State with his wives and at least 170 children, and says he is able to cope only with the help of God.

"A man with 10 wives would collapse and die, but my own power is given by Allah. That is why I have been able to control 86 of them," he told the BBC.

Most Muslim scholars agree that a man is allowed to have four wives, as long as he can treat them equally.

But Mr Bello Abubakar told the BBC: "To my understanding the Koran does not place a limit and it is up to what your own power, your own endowment and ability allows.

"God did not say what the punishment should be for a man who has more than four wives, but he was specific about the punishment for fornication and adultery."

Niger is one of the Muslim majority states to have reintroduced Sharia punishments since 2000.

Several people have been sentenced to death for adultery by Sharia courts but none of these sentences have been carried out.

  3. Nigerian man to divorce 82 wives

Mr Bello Abubakar challenged Muslim scholars two weeks ago
A Nigerian religious leader with 86 wives has accepted an Islamic decree ordering him to divorce all but four of them, local authorities say.

A spokesman for the emir of Bida told the BBC that Mohammadu Bello Abubakar, 84, agreed on Saturday to comply with the decree.

Last week one of Nigeria's top Islamic bodies, the Jamatu Nasril Islam, sentenced him to death.

The sentence was lifted but he was threatened with eviction from his home.

Earlier, Mr Abubakar had challenged Islamic scholars, saying there was no punishment stated in the Koran for having more than four wives.

"I have not contravened any established law that would warrant my being banished from the land... There is no law that says one must not marry more than four wives," the AFP news agency reported him as saying.
Many of the wives live three to a room, some have seven children

"All my wives are with children and some of these are people I have married and stayed with for over 30 years. How can they expect me to leave them within two days?" he reportedly told local newspapers.

The former teacher and Islamic preacher lives in Niger State with his wives and at least 170 children.

Niger is one of the Muslim majority states to have reintroduced Sharia punishments since 2000.

Several people have been sentenced to death for adultery by Sharia courts but none of these sentences have been carried out.

    Niger

Alhaji Abuabakar Bello Massaaba, the man with 86 wives, who was given 48 hours by the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, to divorce 82 of his wives or face banishment, has disappeared from Bida, his home town.
Bello allegedly disappeared without divorcing any of his 86 wives, as directed by the Etsu Nupe, last week.
THISDAY gathered that Bello had earlier sent message to the Etsu Nupe on Tuesday, that he would be in the palace to inform him of which of the wives he had divorced, but did not show up at the appointed time, only for one of his aides to surface at the palace to apologise that Bello would be there at 3 00p.m.
At 3.00 p.m., Bello was also not there, forcing the monarch to send emissary to his residence, but the gates were locked.
A man at the gate reportedly told the emissary that Bello had not been seen since Sunday, and nobody could say where he was.
All efforts to contact either the scholar or his secretary on their mobile phones were abortive, as the phones were switched off.
The Emirate Council and the Niger State Shariah Commission are now considering the next line of action.
Last Thursday, an assembly of people from Nupe Kingdom, incuding Islamic scholars from within and outside the state, tried Bello for what they called anti-Muslim behaviour and bringing Islam to disrepute by marrying more than four wives, and directed that he diviorces 82 of his wives within 48 hours.
Abuabakar, who gave the order on behalf of the Assembly, said he could not guarantee Bello's security if he fails to obey it.

  5. Man With 86 Wives: Court Hears Fatwa Case September 18
    By Chinwendu Nnandozie, Reporter, Minna

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has fixed September 18 for hearing in a suit instituted by the man with 86 wives, Pa Bello Abubakar Masaba, challenging both the pronouncement of fatwa (indictment) on him by an Islamic group, Jamatu Nasril Islam (JNI) and his banishment from Nupe kingdom by the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar.

Daily Independent reports that the Etsu Nupe and the Bida Emirate Council had shortly after the pronouncement of fatwa on Masaba over his marriage to many wives, issued an ultimatum to the 84-year-old man to vacate Bida and the entire Nupe kingdom or divorce 82 out of his 86 wives.

Following a motion exparte earlier filed on September 4, the Federal High Court had granted the applicant leave to enforce his fundamental human rights to personal liberty to life and freedom of movement.

The court has also ordered a stay of all actions or matters relating to or in connection with the complaint in the application.

The suit is titled FHC/Abj/493/08 between Masaba, as the applicant, and JNI and six others, as the defendants. The other defendants are the chairman of the Central Working Committee of fatwa in JNI, Sheikh Usman Abubakar Babatunde, the secretary of the committee, Abdulkarim Muazu. Also included as defendants are the Bida Emirate Council, a body comprising the emir and traditional leaders of Nupe, the Etsu Nupe, and chairman of Niger State traditional rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, the secretary of the Emirate Council, Mallam Abdulmalik Usman, and the Chief Imam of Bida, Sheikh Adamu Yakatu.

The applicant in the suit sought for an order of interim injunction restraining all the respondents, their agents, privies servants, and any other person whatsoever acting on their behalf from threatening, assaulting, maiming, killing, or attempting to threaten, assault, maim or kill or and banish or attempt to banish the applicant, his agents, privies, servants from their place of lawful abode in Bida, Niger State, pending the hearing of the motion on notice on a named date.

Masaba said in an interview with Daily Independent that he was forced to take legal action on the matter because of his conviction that the action of the respondents are at variance with his fundamental human rights. He insisted that he had not violated any established law that warrants the pronouncement of death verdict on him and his banishment by the respondents.

Masaba alleged that since the pronouncements on him, he had been receiving strange telephone calls and death threats from strange callers. He maintained, however, that he was not threatened by the actions of the respondents, insisting that his action was in line with divine inspiration.

The controversial octogenarian with 86 wives and 190 children , Malam Muhammed Abubakar Bello Masaba, was arrested by the Police in Niger State yesterday.
He was arrested at his residence in Bida at about 4a.m when he was about to take his sahur (morning meal in preparation for the day's fasting) and brought straight to Minna.
In Minna, he was arraigned before the Upper Shariah Court, Minna on a three-count charge of insulting or attempting a contempt of religious creed, deceitfully inducing belief of lawful marriage and marriage ceremony without lawful marriage contrary to section 210, 383 and 386 of the penal code respectively.
The accused had been ordered to be remanded in Minna Prison and the case adjourned till 6th of October for further hearing.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Adamu Usman, who was the prosecutor, read the three count charge to the accused, stating that his arrest early yesterday was in compliance with section 35 sub section 415 of the constitution of the country.
Usman requested that the octogenarian should not be granted bail because the Police needed sufficient time to carry out their investigation on the matter describing the offence as,"very serious in nature and we require some substantial time for police to complete their investigations."
The accused who was accompanied by his second wife, his secretary and some of his followers, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The defence counsel, Barrister Shehu Muhammed Jibrin, had pleaded for bail for his client basing his plea on various sections of the constitution with emphasis on section 340 sub section I, section 341 and section 36 sub section 5 and that most importantly, the court has the jurisdiction to grant him the bail.
Jubrin gave the assurance that if granted bail, the accused is ready and willing to produce reasonable surety and shall also abide by all the conditions laid down under the CPC relating to bail.
"The FIR before you is a mere allegation which is subject to verification. Nothing has been proved that the offence has been committed and so, we urge you to uphold the constitution that the accused before you is innocent and therefore must be admitted to bail until such a time when the offences are proved beyond reasonable doubts before you," Jibrin submitted.

  7. Baba is God-sent, says Hafsat, Masaba’s third wife

Are you amazed at how 86 women could share their love with one man? Then, you need to listen to Hajiya Hafsat Bello Masaba, the third wife of Bida, Niger State-based Islamic cleric, Alhaji Abubakar Bello Masaba, acclaimed as Nigeria’s number one polygamist.

Hajiya Hafsat says the detained cleric facing trial in a Sharia Court in Minna for marrying more than four wives prescribed for Muslims, lifted her and many of her mates from despondency and made them happy and responsible married women, hence they decided to stick to him for better for worse.

Masaba’s wife number three, and clearly the most outspoken of the women, Hajiya Hafsat, who was in Minna alongside other wives and children of the embattled octogenarian cleric told Daily Sun in an interview that many of the women in Masaba’s life had little hope of having a fulfilled existence until he married them.

Hear her: “This is the reason why these people should thank God for having somebody like Baba in their midst. He is God-sent. The way some of these women were living before if not for Baba, they would have still been roaming the streets.”
On how she herself met Baba, Hafsat says she attended one of his lectures in Lagos and got instantly attracted to him and has been married to him for 20 years now.
"I got to know him through a friend who told me about his waazi (preaching). One day, I attended his preaching and I became convinced that he is a honest man of God.

"It is through such contacts and introductions that he married many of us. It is not true that he uses juju to marry us. That is a lie. Do I look like somebody anybody can use juju to marry? That is the handwork of his enemies. They are liars.
"Many of these women before they got married to Baba, if you know the kind of life they were living you would pity them, no husband to take care of them. In fact, they were worse than prostitutes. But since Baba came into their lives, they have stopped roaming the streets.

“Now they say he should divorce us, where do they want us to go, go into the streets and become prostitutes? Baba loves us and he cannot divorce us. We are happy with him and we are not complaining. Our parents are not complaining. He married us legally, no force, no juju.”
To Hafsat and the other women, Masaba is the best thing to happen in their lives.

“Baba doesn’t like adultery, that is why he married so many wives. Any of us who shows sign of adultery he sends her packing, like he did recently to his wife 85 (names withheld) from a royal family. Baba sent her packing because she was becoming adulterous.
"You can see we are all beautiful. The truth is even if you are ugly, when you come into Baba’s place, you will be beautiful. We love each other, all of us, no discrimination. Those who think it is easy to keep 86 women in one house, let them try it and see.

"Already we are feeling his absence because of the heavy responsibility in the house. Help us tell them to release our husband. We want the whole world to see us. We are not begging for food. We believe in God. Baba is not a thief. He is an honest man. It is not true we live 10 in a room. They should fear God. It is rubbish they are saying about him. He did not marry us by force or use juju and so cannot divorce us, it is not possible."

On how her husband, at 84, is able to perform his conjugal obligation, Hafsat says it is not difficult for the octogenarian to go round the 86 women, because he has the energy of a 30-year-old man.
"Even you (pointing at the reporter), you cannot perform like my husband, I swear. Anytime any of us needs him, he will come, except he is very busy and does not want to be disturbed."

What if about four of them need him at the same time? Hafsat replies: "It has never happened that way."
Masaba was detained on the orders of a Minna Upper Sharia Court, early last week over allegations of insulting and inciting the contents of a religious creed, as well as engaging in illegal marriages.
The wives and children of the cleric stormed the premises of the Niger State Ministry of Justice in Minna last Thursday morning, protesting the incarceration of their breadwinner.
Some of the placards carried by the wives and children of Masaba read, "Our husband is innocent, he is God-sent," "What Allah has joined together, let no man put asunder," "We are legally married to Baba and we are not complaining," among others.

No official of the ministry attended to the protesting women. The state Acting Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Ndagi Usman Wali said it would be prejudicial for him to comment or make statement on a matter already before a court.
The protesters later moved into their vehicles at the sight of policemen drafted to the scene to ensure there was no breakdown of law and order, and headed for Bida.
The women, led by one of the sons, Maroof arrived the ministry loaded in three different vehicles

  8. Man with 86 wives:

86 lawyers go to court today

    JOHN SHIKLAM, Kaduna

A coalition of lawyers agitating for the fundamental human rights of world’s number one polygamist, Alhaji Muhammed Bello-Masaba, would file a motion on notice to secure a bail for him.

The case comes up at the Federal High Court Abuja, just as embattled Bello-Masaba is currently standing trial at the Upper Sharia Court Minna over charges of marrying 86 wives said to be against Islam and disturbing public peace. Daily Champion recalls that some muslim fundamentalists in Bida Niger State last weekend, issued fresh death sentence known as Fatwah in Islam on Bello-Mesaba.

Lead defence counsel and spokesperson of the group, Mohammed Sanusi while fielding questions from newsmen in Kaduna at the weekend, said the action is one of the numerous legal fireworks to get Masaba freed.

"Our first action in this matter is that we are going to file a motion on notice to get this man out of the prison, at least to give him back his freedom and to respect his rights. After getting him out of the prison, we’ll now proceed to file preliminary objections to the entire case itself to be struck out because it’s not genuine because under Section 141 of the Criminal "Procedure Code, as I said earlier and I still maintain my stand that there must be a human being that must have complained under these Sections—383 and 386 of the Penal Code.

"And if no human being has complained about his act and if he’s to be prosecuted under the Penal Code, the action is void altogether. So, we are going to file preliminary objection to strike out the case against him.

"That is what we intend to do and that is why the CRC has cause to go into the case to observe and then take the proper actions. We are filing the motion on Monday (today) at the Upper Sharia Court , Minna.

" We intend to be observers in Alhaji Bello Masaba’s case currently at the Federal High Court, Abuja and the Upper Sharia Court , Minna and we are ready to provide our services to all the 86 wives and Masaba himself.

"Our observations in respect of his case, more particularly the offences alleged against Masaba. The offences were quoted under the penal code. That is under Section 210 of the Penal Code and Section 383 of the Penal Code and Section 386 of the Penal Code. These offences were quoted under the Penal Code and not purely under Islamic Laws. Since they are charging this man under the Penal Code, the question now is who is the complainant? Under all these sections of the Penal Code, there must be a human being that must have complained of any offence, of any act or of any wrong against Masaba himself.

" But that complainant should be his wives and children. Definitely, his wives are not complaining. Recently, they even protested at the Ministry of Justice and the House of Assembly in Niger State against the detention of Masaba.

" The question now is who is the complainant? Let us take it that the government, the police or the local government or even the Emir are the complainants now because of public peace and interest. But in whose public interest?"Sanusi queried.

He maintained further that putting Masaba in jail without granting him bail on the first day he was presented before the Upper Sharia Court was a breach of his fundamental human rights stressing that Section 36 sub-section 5 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria presumes him to be innocent.

He argued that since Masaba did not plead guilty to the allegations against him, he should be seen to be innocent until proven otherwise.

"But for him now to be refused bail, shows that there is something fishy and that is why we believe the Civil Rights Congress (CRC) has come in. He may have explanations for his actions and if the offences alleged against him are purely under the Islamic Law, he needs not be prosecuted under the Penal Code."

Sanusi said that under the Islamic Law, there are specific provisions under which he could be prosecuted adding that even our constitution approves it. He maintained that if Masaba is going to be prosecuted under the Penal Code, then he should be granted bail.

According to him, the prosecution erred by not taking his age, his enormous responsibilities to his family, more than one hundred children, his wives and other dependants around into consideration before remanding him in prison.

"So, with all these reasons and then the CRC coming in to engage us to observe what is happening in Masaba’s case, we believe it is right and proper and by God’s grace we are going to do our best to render all the legal services we can provide to protect the rights of Masaba and his wives.

"The CRC is an NGO and we, the lawyers attached to the congress know their sources of income. So, the legal services we are going to render to Masaba will be purely on humanitarian ground. So, it’s going to be free legal services.

The young Islamic Cleric and grassroot politicians led by one Alhaji Abdulrahman Aboki trooped to the streets in Bida after last Friday" Jumat service with placards insisting that masah must die.

While lodging his complaints at the id local government headquarters, where they increased by its Acting chairman, Alhaji he said Nasaba;s propensity for women, has disregard for the dictates of Allah.

Also the association of Muslim Lawyers of Nigeria has endorsed the action of the Niger State Sharia commission to which it has offered free legal services when the litigation against Masak, at the upper Sharia Court in Minna on October 6.

Its President, Alhaji Dauda Adekola Mustapha told newsmen in Minna that Masaba’s action are antithetical to Islamic tenets.

  9. Tsav defends Masaaba

    More Stories on This Section

Former Lagos Police boss, Police Commissioner Abubakar Tsav (rtd) has accused the Nigerian elite class of sheer hypocrisy over the noise about Alhaji Bello Masaaba, the controversial polygamist that married 86 wives. According to Tsav, the same crowd of religious purists knew that Late Chief M.K.O Abiola was married to so many wives but did not make a fuss about it because of his statue and wealth.

Speaking to the Saturday Sun in Kano, the police boss cum social critic said the problem with the Nigeria crowd is that they are all pretenders. He noted that the former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, was not prosecuted by the state or harassed in the same manner like the man from Niger State for his marital status, even though it was in the public domain that Chief Abiola had several wives, above the figure approved by his religion.

While accusing those prosecuting Masaaba as simply being selective in their dispensation of justice, he said a lot of Nigerians are guilty of the same offence, if not worst, adding that most Nigerians, either as Christians or Moslems have never maintained the number of women allowed by their religious faith and so, can not claim any moral authority over the accused.

“Christians are supposed to marry one wife only, but there are many enlightened Christians, who are marrying more than a wife” he said. He added that, “Many of our leaders in Nigeria today keep a large number of mistresses and concubines. Sex is a booming industry which suffers no recession, since no raw material or electric power is needed to go into production.”

According the former police boss, the Nigeria Police Force was not exactly right in effecting his arrest in the first place as he has not really violated the laws of the land. He further stated.
“I don’t think that the police have the right to arrest the man with 86 wives, except in a state that practices the Sharia law. The police were simply over zealous. It could have been a different thing if any or some of the 86 wives had complained of a forced marriage”.

Nevertheless, Tsav said that beyond the fine points of the law and justice, the man at the center of the storm, is a sex maniac who wants to satisfy his sexual needs without giving room for charges of adultery and fornication.

He therefore advised Nigerians, Christians and Moslems alike, to leave the issue of marital impropriety of the man with 86 wives in the hands of the Almighty God.
