Once again, northern Nigeria have displayed their intolerance for something unique, something different and something alien to what they are used to. The last time it was the hosting of the Miss World contest in Nigeria, that they successfully fought off, now they have commenced a total war on gays, lesbians and trans-genders in their police force.
Ruth Simon and Clementina Jerome, two police-women serving with the Nigerian police force in Sokoto State were recently dismissed from the police for allegedly
engaging in lesbianism or somewhat lesbian acts of affection.
Their supposed acts of affection were interpreted by the Sokoto Police Command as a ‘discreditable conduct’ for which they were immediately fired from the police force, under an existing "police code"?
Icheoku says, Nigeria is gradually but surely being forced by these northern mallams, into an Islamic country with zero-tolerance for some modernity. It is either sharia law today, stoning-sentence tomorrow, cancelling a beauty pageant there and now the sacking of some alleged "lesbian" police couple? This intolerance is not healthy for any developing society as we all should learn how to accept or better tolerate each other's differences for a stronger union. Let us leave the judgment as to what is right or wrong for the Almighty God to be the judge.
Icheoku calls on the Nigeria Inspector General of police,
Mike Okilo to review the firing of this two police ladies with a view to recalling them. If however the Islamic intolerance of the north will make it impossible for them to continue serving their father-land, may be a redeployment to a more tolerant southern state should be explored. But to have them remain sacked for just their sexual-orientation or its suspicion is not a welcome sign of a progressive country.

Group calls for law against homosexuality
ReplyDeleteThe Fellowship of Christian Patriots (FCP) on Thursday in Abuja called on the National Assembly to pass the Bill seeking to outlaw homosexuality in the country. Speaking to newsmen, the Chairman of the Group, Retired Maj.-Gen. Ike Nwachukwu, urged the lawmakers to follow the part of morality and cultural rectitude. "Every country has its norms and values and you expect that these norms should be imbibed by its citizens. "Therefore, if our lawmakers decide in their wisdom that they should come up with a law that condemns homosexuality, they are doing so in the interest of being the people’s representatives,’’ he said. Nwachukwu noted that FCP was determined to campaign against value systems that demean the historic values of Africa and Nigeria. The Secretary of FCP and Nigeria’s former Ambassador to Vatican, Mr Isaac Sagay, said ``the Bible is consistent in condemning homosexuality.
"What does one expect to get out of the practice of homosexuality and lesbianism? If it is just for pleasure, then, that is not why God created man and woman and endowed them with the virtues of sex. "It was given for the purpose of procreation and anything that negates that purpose is sinful and can never be made righteous regardless of the social norms of the 21st century.’’ Ace broadcaster and member of FCP, Mr. Ikenna Ndukauba, held that homosexuality and lesbianism had found fertile ground in Nigeria. ``The plague is spreading at an alarming rate and unless homosexuals are unmasked, the exponential growth could sooner pose serious irreversible threat to future generations,’’ he said. He said the group would organise a public lecture on the subject on Feb. 20 to highlight the health and religious consequences of homosexuality. He added that the public lecture would be complemented with a `Stand Up For Jesus’ inter-denominational service of praise and thanksgiving on Nov. 21 in Abuja.
