However this is with a proviso, provided they are all organic! How about you? Funny, really? Life is already stressful enough to stress about a partially exposed mammary; so take a look at a happy face for some respite? Did you laugh? Christy 'Apena' Essien-Igbokwe , the wife of Jegede Shokoya of the New Masquerade and Nigeria's lady of songs is dead; she was 51years old. Although her family claimed that "brief Illness" killed her like so many Nigerians; Icheoku retorts that it was most likely AKwa Ibom voodoo and remote control that was used to arrest her. It is on record that she had fallen out with the governor of her native Akwa Ibiom State and have been having a relentless war for political turf with the governor? The current trend of baring boobs has become a source of concern for many Nigerians - women and men alike. Newspapers and magazines are awash with pictures of half nude women. They are from all walks of life - some supposed celebrities, fashionistas and socialites. In today’s world, an outfit is rarely considered beautiful if the wearer does not bare a little flesh.
•ALEX OKOROJINecklines are plunging deeper and wider and bras that aid achieving cleavage is getting hotter in the market. While the weak in our midst guggle this indecency, most right thinking women cringe in embarrassment for a member of their gender. Because so much is bared, a normal cleavage no longer arrests attention. To get attention, some women go the extra mile leaving nothing to imagination.
As a colleague rightly observed, so much has been bared that, these days, men get impatient with little or no exposure at all. For you to be noticed, you have to bare a lot!
So, what is it with the this pair of mammalian gland carriers? Lovers of boobs have coined all sorts of names to describe a woman’s breasts - from the familiar to the totally absurd; with names like 2-face, referring to the twin mould on a woman’s chest. Osodi Oke is another derogatory name commonly used by people in the western part of Nigeria. And the most ridiculous one ever heard, Olubunmi Ok—gie! Referring to a very voluptuous pair of boobs.
This piece is not about what name a pair of boobs should be called but to find out why a lot of older women are involved in this practice they see as fashion. A woman who would not want her name mentioned in print blames the development on the problems created by younger women. According to the over-fifty mother of three, “What do you want the housewife to do when her husband is busy looking at younger women who wear skimpy clothes and display their firm breasts? Although, I may not dress that way but believe me, a lot of women are doing it because they have found that their spouses who are also old are admiring these young girls who dress that way. So, to be relevant in your marriage, you have to do what you can to keep your man - which includes dressing to feel young and beautiful.”
“How many women like what they see when they stand in front of the mirror?”, queries Uduak (surname withheld), a little annoyed. She added, “A lot of women after having children, feel uncomfortable with their bodies. So, when they are able to get their boobs ‘lifted’, mainly through plastic surgery, of course, they want to flaunt what they’ve got. Don’t forget that many housewives are suffering in silence and actually envy these young women, when they wear clothes and have this nice cleavage to show for it. I may not subscribe to too much exposure but a little won’t kill and that is why older women dress the way they do. The competition is very stiff.”
Like it or not, you simply can’t ignore the boobs. Your wife may never give you a black eye but ignoring her and paying tribute to younger women with firmer boobs kills her self esteem and in an attempt to prove herself, she takes dressing to the point of the ridiculous, hoping to get affirmation or plain acknowledgment that she is still beautiful in spite of the fact that her boobs are south ward bound.
•ANNETTE DOREMichelle Mikinney Hammond in her book, The Diva Principles writes; “If we celebrate what we have, others will join us.” Her words are very true and rightly explain the situation that we have today. Other concerned people say that the queue of women exposing flesh has become so long, necessitating a senator to sponsor a bill to regulate dressing in our society.
Renowned General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, writing in his daily devotional, Open Heavens, says: “In those days, it was easy to tell a prostitute from a decent lady through her dressing. When young girls strayed from decency, their parents , particularly their mothers immediately whipped them back on line. Today, the story is so different. You can barely differentiate decent and indecent ladies via their dressing. Housewives are dressing no different from prostitutes. What is happening? There is a shift in values and prostitution is relocating to homes and family life.”
